Leah Salomaa
Leah Salomaa grew up in Toronto, Ontario in an artistic family.
In high school, she joined an a cappella Celtic singing group and discovered music of her mother's Irish and British heritage. She took trips to Scotland and learned to play the bodhran (Irish frame drum). As a young adult, Leah would split her time following her mother?s footsteps teaching music to children by day and performing in clubs at night. She also became a regular in the recording studio working as a vocalist.
Leah has released three successful family music recordings: ?I Like to Rise, Family Folk Songs?, ?Father Sun and Mother Moon, Soulful songs for Children? and ?Under a Winter Star, Family songs for the Holidays?, under her independent label, girlfishmusic. Her cds are carried in Chapters/Indigo stores across Canada, and also sell in many fine independent children?s bookstores.
She has performed for families across Ontario in libraries, folk festivals, including: Guelph's Hillside Festival, the Toronto District School board, Waldorf Schools, Montessori Schools and at club venues such as Hugh?s Room.
Chatelaine Magazine has listed Leah as one of Canada?s leading children?s performers. She has also been mentioned in Canadian Family Magazine and CityParent as a family favourite.
There are no gimmicks in Leah's music. Too often children?s music draws on the silly and mundane, (which can drive parents nuts!) Instead of this, she enjoys creating a musical environment that celebrates acoustic, melodic, joyful and pure songs that encourage families to sing and dance. Her music touches on Celtic, Gospel, Classic American/Canadian, and traditional styles, including some of her own original compositions. Armed with the Irish bodhran drum and a crystal clear singing voice, Leah inspires children and parents to sing from their hearts and dance with their spirit.
